Royal Marine Hotel - Wall of Fame
Since 1828, this South Dublin Hotel has occupied the site now occupied by the Deluxe 4 Star Royal Marine Hotel.
Originally know as Hayes Royal Hotel, William Dargan builder of the Kingstown Railway bought out the Royal Hotel in 1863 and originally built the Royal Marine Hotel.
The Dun Laoghaire Hotel was designed by John McCurdy who also designed many other buildings and churches of significance in Ireland during this period.
The old Hayes Royal Hotel was incorporated into the design, but later demolished in the 1960’s.
The newly developed Royal Marine Hotel, first opened its doors for business in 1865 and has been a Dublin institution ever since.
The Royal Marine Hotel is regarded as one of the finest 4 Star Hotels in Dublin and have hosted many Heads of State, Kings, Queens and celebrities from all walks of life including old blue eyes Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye, Laurel & Hardy, Jimmy Kennedy, Guglielmo Marconi and Laurel & Hardy. When the British Queen Victoria came to Ireland via the boat to Dun Laoghaire, she stopped off at the Royal Marine Hotel and had a 16 course breakfast. Even the Irish Freedom Fighter Michael Collins has stayed at the Dun Laoghaire Hotel with his partner Kitty Kiernan.
The Royal Marine Hotel closed for extensive re-development in 2004 and re-opened on the 22nd of June 2007 for what will be a new phase in the history of this landmark Hotel.
